Choosing the Right Paper for Your Printer

The quality of image or print that your printer delivers depends to a great extent, on the type of paper used. Printing can be done on any kind of paper. But to get the desired results, you should be wise in your choice of printer paper. Most people end up buying copier paper because it is low-cost. Of course, this paper is fine for printing text but it falls short when you want to print pictures or graphics.

There are two factors which should be taken into consideration when selecting paper for printing:
  • The Paper's Brightness: While smooth paper results in brilliant images, coarse paper results in images that are not so bright.

  • The Paper's Absorption Potential: Expect to get blurred images when you use low-cost paper caused by ink running down the page. On the other hand, coated paper hinders ink absorption. The result: high resolution prints.

Here is a brief guide on choosing paper. Of all the types of paper, there is no doubt that coated paper is of the best quality. It will give the required brilliance to your pictures and graphics. To give your prints the appearance of magazine prints, glossy coated paper is the perfect choice. If you are printing a document that is not too important, then you can settle for generic 20 lb. paper. A better quality paper type is any white paper in the range of 24 lb-40 lb. The level of ISO brightness in this sort of paper is good.To cut down on paper usage, recycled paper is an option to consider. But this won't be that good a choice if you are printing using a laser printer or an inkjet printer. Another way to minimize paper usage would be to use scrap paper for rough copies.
